Commercial work brings constraints residential work does not: live buildings, other trades, and schedules that cannot move.
The Hartsfield International Airport project involved two years of preparation. The sculptures and photo murals were assessed using footprints and photographs supplied by the sculptors, because the lighting had to be installed before the art arrived. The lighting equipment went in between 9pm and 4am, during the quietest hours the airport has. Atlanta Lighting Design was also involved in art installations on the International Concourse.
That is the character of commercial lighting design: planning far enough ahead that the lighting is ready for work that does not exist yet, and installing without interrupting a building in use.
